What is so very interesting about anxiety problems and tobacco chemicals is that nicotine heightens the smoker's heart rate, which puts your body in an agitated state. For smokers with high anxiety disorders, that "tranquil" effect that many people have said that smoking has on their bodies, is actually just the relief from the withdrawal symptoms. Whilst the nicotine in the body actually puts one in an agitated state of mind, kind of like anxierty problems themselves, it "feels" calming to smokers because of decreased withdrawal effects.
What happens to these users with anxiety issues when they actually quit forever? The research couldn't be completely sure. Although smoking cigarettes actually increases the symptoms of anxiety disorders making it more challenging to kick the habbit, as soon as the anxiety-riddled smoker definitely quits, it should stop their anxiety being so bad. So have a word next time someone says "it calms me".
